Music video analysis and research
MUSIC VIDEO RESEARCH AND INSPO
As I have mentioned in previous posts, the theme or vibe I am going for is psychedelic, trippy aesthetic. I am interested in the patterns, range of colours used and the combination of random objects that somehow fit well together. Baring this in mind, I will carry out an extensive research on music videos that follow this style in order to analyse the way in which they apply it to create meaning. The genre I will be approaching is a hybrid between alternative music/ indie. In this section of the research, I will compare the 3 music videos down below:
Cabin Fever- Jaden Smith
Good News- Mac Miller
Freak Show- Urban
Although they are all part of similar genres, their style varies depending on the lyrics, mood and tone of their music. Taking as an example Cabin Fever in comparison with Good news. They both have a relaxed aura and are not very forced nor do they really follow a specific narrative. Jaden Smith represents current world issues (such as the black lives matter movement) through the perspective of a young person. He mixes it with a romantic narrative and creates a representation of what goes on in a teenager's mind today. The colour palette is quite vibrant and uses pastel colours and warm tones to give a sense of tranquility and peace. In contrast, the good news video follows a more 'paper like' aesthetic, using real life objects as collage pieces where the character (Mac Miller) sort of appears on them. It is obviously a video paying homage to him after his passing, using one of the last songs he recorded and never released. What makes it different from Cabin Fever, is the fact that the video itself doesn't make sense, it is just filled with patterns of random objects in bizarre sceneries like a piano in a field or flowers in the sky. I believe the video is very representative of Mac Miller's personality, chaotic and fun, which is why it is so entertaining to watch regardless of the fact that he is no longer alive.
Good News VS Freak Show
They are both very different music videos. The main difference is the fact that the lyrics of freak show are representative of the imagery and mise en scene. They are narrating the story of a circus and 'freaks' whilst in Good News, like I previously mentioned, they didn't try to create a story for the audience to follow or link with the lyrics. Something they both have in common is the tumultuous visuals they use. Although, the colour palette is much darker and monotone (black, dark blue and white tones). This gives it an eery or creepy mood, perfectly relevant to the lyrics. This is also a reflection of the artist as he is known for combining objects that do not tally up, (can be seen in their Cradles music video too).
